The Space Hamster is a pet. At the end of The Visitor, Ryder may choose to keep the Hamster safely confined in the Pathfinder's Quarters or to release it on a planet. While the cage is placed inconveniently, blocking the view of the Space X Rocket Model, releasing the animal on a planet is ecologically inadvisable.
