The asari are a Milky Way species. As the first common era species to discover interstellar travel and the Citadel, the asari are the race other species look to as the leaders of galactic society. They are adept warriors and diplomats, taking the approach of interspecies inclusivity and cooperation as a means of achieving galactic peace.

Biology[edit | edit source]

Asari are one of the longest lived of the council races with lifespans that reach into the thousands of years. Their physical structure closely resembles that of a human female, but given their ability to mate with any species, they have physical traits that can be found attractive by all races. Their head tentacles closely resemble a turian’s fringe, their blue to purple skin attracts the amphibious salarians, so forth and so on.

Abundant natural sources of element zero throughout the asari home planet, colonies, and controlled territories, allowed for the evolution of biotically active and biotically resistant flora and fauna. Because of this, all asari are born with biotic powers though not all choose to develop them.

Asari can mate and produce viable offspring with any individual of another or the same species. They reproduce without the exchange of genetic material rather they connect nervous systems or ‘meld’ with their partner and use their partner’s genetic information as a guide to randomize their offspring’s. All offspring of any union are always asari and any resemblance to the ‘father’ is anecdotal at best.

An asari's life is broken down by three distinct stages: the maiden stage, the matron stage, and the matriarch stage. The maiden stage is characterized by a strong desire to explore, take risks, and experience new things. The matron stage is marked by the asari's desire to mate and raise children. While in the matriarch stage, the asari eschews exploration and motherhood for greater roles as a mentor, guide, and ruler of the younger generations.

History and culture[edit | edit source]

Asari come from the planet Thessia located in the Parnithia system of the Athena nebula. They discovered the Citadel in 580 BCE (before common era) and with the salarians formed a single galaxy wide governing body, the Citadel Council, in 500 BCE.

Because of their long life span, asari tend to have a 'long view' not common in other races. When they encounter a new species or situation, the asari are more comfortable with an extended period of passive observation and study than immediate action. They are unfazed that some of their investments or decisions may not pay off for decades or centuries. Matriarchs can seem to make incomprehensible decisions, but their insight is evident when their carefully-laid plans come to fruition. In interstellar relations, this long view manifests in an unspoken policy of centrism. The asari instinctively seek to maintain stable balances of economic, political, and military power.

Traditionally, asari spread their influence through cultural domination and intellectual superiority. They invite new species of advanced development to join the galactic community, knowing that their ideals and beliefs will inevitably influence the existing culture.
